Tylenol #3   (U.S.N.L.M.)
Dosing: (Mild to moderate
pain of iritis, corneal abrasion)
1 or 2 tabs every 4 to 6 hrs.   Maximum daily dose of 360mg codein and 4,000 mg tylenol.
Chem Specs 30mg codeine and 300mg acetaminophen
Quantities Often prescribed on 24hr basis with no refills. (e.g. "12 (twelve) tablets)")
Cost 15.72 for 20 tablets   generic
Class Opium alkaloid narcotic (codeine). Aniline analgesic (acetaminophen).
Action Synergistic pain relief. Each drug acting on a separate area of the nervous system.
Usage Schedule 3 narcotic used for mild to moderate pain relief.
Caution Acetaminophen related risk of acute liver failure in patients with underlying liver
disease and alcohol use. Alcohol and other CNS depressants may cause
additive CNS depression.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to codeine or acetaminophen
Pediatric use Safety and effectiveness below age 18 not established.
Pregnancy Category C. Embryo resorption and delayed ossification associated with toxic dose in rats.
Acetamenophen overdose is a common cause of liver failure.
Codeine ultra-rapid metabolizers (CYP2D6*2x2 genotype) subject to overdose.
Significant sedation, GI disturbance and constipation are common side effects.
Consider Empirin when inflammatory control is desired.
