Class Aminoglycoside / Glycopeptide
Action Aminoglycoside prevents bacterial protein synthesis (binds to ribosome s30 or s50).
Glycopeptide binds to cell wall amino acids altering bacterial cell membrane permeability.
Activity Active against a wide variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria including
some penicillin-resistant, gentamicin-resistant and methicillin-resistant strains.
Usage Indicated in the treatment of severe external infections of the eye and adnexa.
Aminoglycoside toxicity possible with pre-sensitized pts. or with extended use.
Contraindications Known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Pediatric use > 2 months
Pregnancy No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. 3 animal
studies have failed to demonstrate fetal risk with tobramycin. Animal
reproduction studies have not been conducted with vancomycin.
