Action | Inhibits protein synthesis, binding to the 30s ribosomal subunit of the mRNA. Inhibits production of metalloproteinases and other cytokines. May inhibit production of bacterial lipases. |
Usage | Indicated in the treatment of inclusion conjunctivitis / trachoma and many other conditions with susceptible organisms. Often used in the treatment of blepharitis (meibomianitis), ocular rosacea, and recurrent corneal erosions. |
Warnings | Phototoxicity (exaggerated sunburn reaction, skin pigment changes), yeast infections, increased intracranial pressure, and decreased effectiveness of birth control may occur. Dental discoloration has been reported in adults. |
Contraindications | Hypersensitivity to any of the tetracyclines. Use with caution even in non-pregnant women of childbearing years. (Consider Cephalexin). |
Pediatric use | Enamel hypoplasia and discoloration in children to age 8 and in the last half of pregnancy. |
Pregnancy | Category D (Known risk to developing fetus.) |
Use caution with concurrent Coumadmadin usage. Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents. Resistance is very common. |
